The old Maytag Dryer started making a very distressing noise.  It sounded like it was falling apart inside.  After going in there to explore I discovered it was an easy problem to repair.  The squirrel-cage fan was supposed to have a flat spot in the center so it would not spin by itself on the motor shaft.  The flat spot wore out and the fan was freely spinning and wobbling on the shaft.  It sounded like a bad bearing or pulley. It was really noisy and sounded like the dryer was going to self-destruct.

Below are the pictures of the sequence of repair after ordering and obtaining the $15 part.

Unplug the dryer from the power receptacle.  Remove the front cover by removing two Phillips screws near the bottom of the cover.

Remove the front drum mount and air baffle by removing four hex screws on the mounting brackets.

Remove the wiring protector plate by removing the two hex screws in front.

Remove the blower housing cover by removing all the hex screws around the cover and the lower one on the bracket.

Remove the fan.

There is a compression clamp you can remove with pliers.  You will need a C-Ring removal tool to remove the C-Ring from the shaft.  Then pull the fan out.

It's hard to see what is wrong with the old fan from this photo.  If you look closely at the old fan on the right you can see the center hole is slightly bigger and it is almost completely round inside.  The new fan on the left has a smaller hole and there is a flat spot on the top so it can't spin on the motor shaft.

Install the new fan.  Install the compression clamp and the C-Ring.

Reinstall the blower housing cover.

Reinstall the wiring protector plate.

Reinstall the front drum mount and air baffle.

Finally, reinstall the front cover.  Have your associate scan the floor for extra screws or parts you may have forgotten to install.  This associate of mine was the same one who stole some screws when I had the dryer apart the first time during the diagnosis process.  I never saw her take them. She always looks so innocent too. I threatened her with a ride home on the roof of the car and she coughed them up.
